Bolsena
Is a city rising along the east coast of the lake of Bolsena, and along the Cassia road, 100 km north of Rome, in the province of Viterbo. Bolsena is a caractheristic medieval town laying at the basis of Volsinii Mountains. What to visit? The town wall of the Etruscan-Roman city of Volsinii and other rests such as the forum, frescos and and Roman mosaics. After that, Etruscan necropolis and the Territorial Museum of the Bolsena Lake, that was in origin a Monaldeschi castle. To see, also the S. Cristina Church (in which happened the miracle of the Corpus Domini), the Del Drago Palace, the S. Francesco Church, the Sanctuary of Madonna del Giglio.
Choosing from many tourist-attractiveness, we can talk about archaeological and cultural ones; on the lake shores have lived, in facts, many civilizations, such as the Villanoviana one, the Etruscan one and the Roman one, while the medieval period left indelible marks in the surrounding towns.
Why to visit Bolsena?
Because it is a city rich in history and an attractive tourist location, because of the lake. In fact, Bolsena offers many well-organised tourist structures, easts, festivals and folklore. After that, from Bolsena you can reach easily each town surrounding the lake: Montefiascone, with the most-impressive landscape above the lake, Marta main and active haven, Capodimonte, above the picturesque promontory facing the lake,Valentano, with its large overlook above the lake,Gradoli, rising on a spur of tufa. In the end, Grotte di Castro, that still preserve the fascination of its medieval structure, and San Lorenzo Nuovo, a perfect example of a city plan of the XVIIIth century, and Acquapendente, city of “Pugnaloni” and city of beautiful palace like: Fidi Palace, Viscontini Palace and the Bishop Palace.
How to reach this city?
Rising along the path of the Francigena way, it is easily reachable both from Rome and from Siena, traveling the Cassia road. From the Sole Highway (A1) exit at the Orvieto toll booth, km 24; or, From the Sole Highway (A1) exit at the Orte toll booth, freeway to Viterbo, then Cassia road (heading to Siena, Km 30 + 30); From the Aurelia way, exit Montalto di Castro (60km) heading to Canino, Valentano; from Viterbo, covering the Cassia road for km 30.
