Marta

Marta, main haven of the Lake, is a characteristic fishers town, placed on the south shore of the lake of Bolsena; it is about 24 km from the province town ( Viterbo ); the medieval town is perched on a hill, from which it overlooks the valley.
Marta shows tufa houses, characteristic alleys, stairs, striking views, dominate by the clock tower. This enchanting lake town is well known also for its recipes, the DOC wine Cannaiola, and for the “Barabbata”, wonderful and striking folk feast.

What to see in Marta’s town?
The Clock Tower, the Renaissance palace of the Farnesiano period, tising next to the town hall, and above all the Roman Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte (Madonna of the Mountain), rebuilt in the end of the XVth century, rising up on a panoramic hill, not far from the old town; this sacred place for the inhabitants of Marta (martiani) is important for them also because it represents the fulcrum of the folk feast Barabbata.
The beach, very near to the center and kept in state of nature, is partially shaded and usually not very crowded, so that you can have fun and completely relax.

A must see:
14th of May – Madonna del Monte Feast or “Barabbata”
First sunday after 14th of May – “lattarino” (a kind of lake fish) festival.
